What is Google Analytics?
Google Analytics is a free web analytics service offered by Google (Google, ya know, the king of the internet) Anyways, this service tracks and reports website traffic. It provides insights and basic tools for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) marketing purposes.
Why would you need to know about your website traffic?
If you want to grow your business or blog, which I’m assuming is the case, then you need to have some idea about your website traffic visitors. Google Analytics let’s you measure your traffic, learn from the data, and gives insights into making strategic marketing business decisions.
Data, data, data.
What kind of “data” are we talking about here?
Well, by implementing Google Analytics onto your website, you can have access to information like this:
- How many people have been on your website?
- How many of those people are returning visitors how many are brand new?
- What percentage of the user’s are male? Female?
- What are your users top interests? Movies? Food Drink? Entertainment? Social Media?
- Where are your users coming from? Google? Facebook? Twitter?
- What’s your most popular page? Least popular page?
- How long do they stay on those pages?
- How long do they stay on your site?
- Which page are most of them leaving your site after?
- (and literally so much more)
Data like this can not only help with conversations sales, but it can help you narrow down your target audience their needs. Did one blog post or marketing campaign do better than the other? Are people leaving your website without engaging? What device are your user’s using to view your website? Is your website responsive to that device?

How Do You Set Up Google Analytics?
Regardless if your website is powered by WordPress or SquareSpace, you have to sign up with a Google Account in order to take advantage of Google Analytics. Not necessarily a [email protected] email address, but basically you need to sign up with a Google Account to have any access to Google’s tools.
Step #1: Create a Google Account
(if you don’t already have a Gmail Email. When you signed up for Gmail, Google automatically created you’re a Google Account) Personally I think it’s easier to have a Gmail email account because it lets you access all of Google’s tools and services without having to remember login credentials for a million things.
Step #2: Login to Google Analytics
In the top right hand corner, it will say: “Sign In”
Click on that and a drop down menu will appear.
Click on the fourth option: “Google Analytics”
Step #3: Sign Up for Google Analytics Service
Click the “Sign Up” button all the way to the right.
You’ll than be taken to a screen that looks like the image before. Fill out the information for your Google Analytics Account.
- Account Name
- Website Name
- Website URL
- Industry Category
- Reporting Time Zone
After you hit the blue Sign Up button in the bottom corner, you’ll receive this pop-up:
Make sure that your country/region is selected in the top drop down box carefully read over the Google Analytics Terms of Service.
Step 4: Locate Your Google Analytics Tracking ID
Make note of this Tracking ID. This ID is used to track and report the analytics for the property that we just set up in step 3.
How To Identify Filter Yourself Out Of Analytics:
Google Analytics is super beneficial because of all of the data information that it gives you about your visitors. BUT, if you don’t identify filter yourself out of your Google Analytics then every time you visit your own website you could potentially be skewing and messing up some of the data. The best way to avoid this is to filter yourself out of the reports by your IP address.
(Please note: If you view your website on your mobile phone using a different IP address, this will not work. As of now, there isn’t a sure-fire way to filter yourself out when using mobile because there’s nothing that can help distinguish you from other users on that IP address)
Step 1: Figure Out Your IP Address
In order to filter out your IP address, you need to know WHAT your IP address is.
What’s the best way to do this? Google it. Literally type in “What’s my IP address?” into Google Bam it will automatically pull your public IP address. Super cool right? And sort of creepy, but hey, it works!
Step 2: Create Filter In Google Analytics
- Assuming that your still logged into your Google Analytics account (If you’re not, go back to Google Analytics and log in)
- Click on the “Admin” Tab in the top menu bar.
- In the far left column, make sure that your correct “Account” is chosen (This will only change if you manage more than one Analytics account)
- Click on “All Filters“
- Click the “+ Add Filter” button
- Create a Filter Name — I just put “Home IP Address“
- Keep the Filter Type as “Predefined“
- For Select a Filer Type, choose “Exclude“
- For Select Source or Destination, choose “Traffic from the IP Addresses“
- For Select Expression, choose “That Are Equal To“
- Paste your IP address (from the previous Google Search) into that box below.

- Under the “Apply Filter to Views” Select your Account that we created and hit the “Add” button. Your account name should switch from the left hand “Available Views” box, to the right hand “Selected Views” box.
- Click the blue “Save” button in the bottom corner! Bam baby, now you’re filtered ?
The Next Steps Are Different For WordPress Users SquareSpace Users.
Follow whichever set of directions pertains to you!
- Login to Your WordPress Dashboard. On your dashboard menu, click on “Plugins“. At the top of the Plugin page click the “Add New” button. In the search bar in the top right hand corner type in “Monster Insights” (Monster Insights used to be called “Google Analytics by Yoast – same great technology, just a new name.)
- Once you’ve installed and activated the plugin, “Monster Insights” will show up on your Dashboard menu, towards the bottom. Next, it will prompt you to “Configure your Google Analytics Settings” — click on that alert.
- WordPress will take you to the Monster Insights Authentication page. Click on the “Authenticate with your Google Account”
- You will than get a pop up from Google, asking you permission to share your Analytics data with the Monster Insights plugin. Once you click the blue “Allow” button, you’ll be given a code to copy. Copy that code.
- Paste that code into the given box and click “Save Authentication Code”
- After you save your code, you’ll have to choose the Google Analytics Profile that you would like to associate with Monster Insights.
- After you select the correct profile, remember to save this information BAM you’re now goooood to go!
- Login to your SquareSpace Account and go to your main menu. In your main menu, click on “Settings“.
- From that menu, click on “Advanced” towards the bottom of the menu.
- From that menu, click on “External Services”
- The External Services menu will open and you’ll see a spot to enter your “Google Analytics Account Number” (The Google Analytics Account Number is the tracking ID that we got from setting up our Google Analytics Account in the first part of this tutorial). Once you paste your tracking ID in that box, hit “Save” and BAM you’re good to go!
